PatientRightsAdvocate.org (PRA) released a new Interim Semi-Annual Report exposing hospitals that are leaving consumers without the fairness and financial certainty real prices provide.

Despite federal transparency rules that took effect four and a half years ago and polling showing that 9-in-10 Americans support price transparency, many hospitals have stopped publishing actual prices in dollars and cents and instead posted estimates, percents, and algorithms, which are uninterpretable by everyday consumers.

Today, PatientRightsAdvocate.org (PRA) released a joint report with George Washington University (GWU) and Stanford University School of Medicine (Stanford) detailing how nonprofit health system UCHealth brought more than 15,700 lawsuits against Colorado patients from 2019 through 2023 for medical debt. Patients who were sued reported not having easy access to prices, blocking them from verifying the accuracy of hospital charges.

PatientRightsAdvocate.org (PRA) is urging Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo to sign A.B. 343, major legislation to deliver hospital price transparency to Nevadans that was passed out of the Nevada Legislature earlier this week. If enacted, the bill would require Nevada hospitals to post all actual prices of available services online, so patients can see upfront prices before care, as well as provide tools for patients to seek recourse when they have been overcharged. It would codify the federal Hospital Price Transparency Rule first enacted in January 2021 under President Donald J. Trump and since expanded in February 2025.
