PRA Tells CMS: Make CPT Codes Openly Available to the Public

PRA submitted comments to CMS on the proposed rule CY 2027 Payment Policies Under the Physician Fee Schedule and Other Changes to Part B Payment and Coverage Policies, urging the agency to end the American Medical Association's paywall around Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes.

PRA’s comment welcomes CMS’s efforts to investigate the harms of the AMA’s monopoly over CPT and potential alternatives to relying on it. It recommends that, as long as federal law incorporates and requires the use of CPT, CMS should ensure that CPT is openly and freely available to the general public, not hidden behind an expensive paywall maintained by a private advocacy group.

PRA believes it is contrary to fundamental principles of fair notice and due process to require citizens to pay a fee to a private party to access standards incorporated into federal and state law. PRA has thus filed suit against the AMA to confirm PRA’s right to make CPT openly available to the public.
